'Understanding Mental Illness & Substance Use'
Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders very commonly co-exist, and people with a diagnosis of mental illness are highly vulnerable to developing a substance use disorder.
Many people choose to 'self-medicate' with alcohol or other drugs in an attempt to reduce the severity of the symptoms they may be experiencing, or as a means of escaping distressing emotions.
This 'Dual' diagnosis is complex, and mostly misunderstood.
