Skylight Wayville 'Lived Experience' Panel Forum

'Understanding Mental Illness & Substance Use'

Mental Illness and Substance Use Disorders very commonly co-exist, and people with a diagnosis of mental illness are highly vulnerable to developing a substance use disorder.

Many people choose to 'self-medicate' with alcohol or other drugs in an attempt to reduce the severity of the symptoms they may be experiencing, or as a means of escaping distressing emotions.

This 'Dual' diagnosis is complex, and mostly misunderstood.

  • Want to better understand the connection between mental illness and substance use?
  • Come along and hear from our special panel of 'Recovery Advocates' who will share their experiences and approaches to recovery
  • Special guest panel members from the Drug and Alcohol sector will shed light on why substance use is so prevalent within our community and what we can do to support loved ones or friends with this disorder
