Older Person Mental Health First Aid
Mental Health First Aid for people aged 65 years +
This is a 12-hour course (4 modules, each 3 hours) which will be run over 2 days on Tuesday 17th & Wednesday 18th July,
9:00am – 5:00pm with allowance for breaks.
This course is designed for members of the public to learn how to assist an older person (65 years +) who is developing a mental health problem, has a worsening of an existing mental health problem, or is in a mental health crisis. This includes an older person who may be experiencing confusion or dementia.Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common mental health problems in older people, how to offer initial help, where and how to get professional and other help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.
Course content includes :
- anxiety problems
- confusion and dementia
- psychosis in the older person
- Suicidal thoughts and behaviours
- Panic attacks
- Unsafe behaviours due to confusion - wandering, unsafe to drive, and unsafe in current place of residence
- Challenging behaviours due to confusion
All participants will receive an Older Person MHFA manual and a certificate of completion, or accreditation on completion of training. Morning and afternoon tea will be provided on both days, participants required to supply their own lunch. Lunch orders are available on the day of training. Training is from 9am to 5pm each day.
